All 10 passengers were rescued, Tuesday, when their boat capsized while heading to Ikorodu from Lagos Island area of Lagos state.
Confirming the incident, the Zonal Coordinator, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) South West, Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye, said the boat took off from Lagos Island going to Ikorodu when it suddenly capsized.
“They were rescued with special support by operators and volunteers who pulled resources together,” he added.
Speaking also, the DG/CEO, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, told LagosToday that the agency in partnership with the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has beefed up surveillance on Lagos waters to mitigate incidents on the waterways.
“With Third Mainland Bridge under construction, we know a lot of people will be going through waterways. We needed to prepare and increase surveillance exercise to mitigate against accidents on the waters,” he adds.
He further acknowledged that LASEMA is also working with the Lagos State Safety Commission at the Jetty to ensure every passenger goes with a life jackets.
