Following the Lagos and the Benue boats mishaps on the waterways that claimed 28 lives at the weekend, the President, Muhmmadu Buhari has commiserated with families of the bereaved as he described the incidents as sad and unfortunate.

In a statement the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu issued, the president, lamented with the families of the victims, the citizens of both states and governments.

Describing their deaths as sad and unfortunate, he charged water transportation travelers to take safety measures seriously to prevent avoidable deaths.

He further implore state governments and residents of the surrounding communities around the spots of the accidents to intensify search for victims still missing.

Buhari, in his reaction, called on would-be passengers of water transportation to adhere strictly to safety regulations outlined by national and state authorities to prevent avoidable accidents and loss of lives and property.

According to the president, such a call has become imperative in view of prevailing COVID-19 guidelines against overcrowding and night travels.

He, therefore, prayed that God would comfort the bereaved families and grant rest to the souls of the departed.
