History was made on Sunday night, as Canadian sitcom, Schitt’s Creek clinched seven comedy categories at the 2020 Emmy ceremony alongside becoming the first comedy film to win four main acting awards in a single year.
The Levy-family directorial ended up picking up statuettes for key categories including best lead actor, best lead actress, and best comedy.
An elated Dan Levy, son of Eugene Levy, expressed: “The internet’s about to turn on me. I’m so sorry!” after his third win.
It was all cheers at the private Toronto venue the Schitt’s cast and crew used for a private Emmy watch party.
The cast, including winners Catherine O’Hara, Annie Murphy, Eugene Levy, and director Andrew Cividino, opted to be together on the socially distant big night, though the majority of this year’s nominees “attended” the ceremony virtually.
Schitt’s picked up nine statuettes overall, breaking a record previously set by The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which became the most awarded comedy in a single year with its eight wins in 2019; those wins included Creative Arts Emmys.
According to Dan Levy the wins were “absolutely incredible. I think my dad said it best. It feels like a dream that you don’t want to wake up from, to be perfectly honest.
“What an absolutely wonderful way to end our series,” he added. “I don’t think you could ask for a better conclusion to a story than [this] tonight. So, we are thrilled.”
Dan also addressed fans who have been hoping for a Schitt’s Creek follow-up movie. Though he didn’t rule out the possibility entirely, he said that the wins could prevent the possibility of new releases.
“Here’s the thing…this is the best way we could have ever ended the show. So, if there is an idea that ever pops into my head, worthy of these wonderful people, it has to be really freaking good at this point…because this was a really nice way of saying goodbye. So, fingers crossed that we get a really good idea that comes into our head.”
Schitt’s Creek is a Canadian television sitcom created by Dan and Eugene Levy which aired on CBC Television from January 2015 to April 2020. Produced by Not a Real Company Productions, the series follows the trials and tribulations of the formerly wealthy Rose family when they are forced to relocate to Schitt’s Creek, a small town they once purchased as a joke.
