In its efforts to curb the effect of flood across the state, the Lagos State Government has said it is dredging 235 channels.
The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tunji Bello, during an inspection of canals, explained that the government was working on 193 secondary and 42 primary channels in the state.
His words: “The state government is working on all channels to curb the effect of flood in the state. The Emergency Flood Abatement Gang is in all the 37 Local Government Areas and 20 Local Government Development Areas, cleaning and clearing canals, drainage, as well as opening manholes.”
He, however, appealed to residents to desist from the arbitrary dumping of solid wastes in drainages and canals; erecting buildings on drainage alignments to continuously sustain a flood-free Lagos as most flood challenges are man-made.
“I urge all residents who still patronise cart pushers to refrain from the illegal act but ensure they dispose of their wastes through approved PSP operators.”
Speaking also, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Drainage and Water Resources, Joe Igbokwe, added that those who encroached on the canals right of way had always constituted a major challenge in the state drainage maintenance.
He, therefore, urged residents to ensure that their environment was clean and free of stagnant water at all times.
