The Commissioner of Police Lagos State, Hakeem Odumosu, has paid tribute to Police Inspector, Adekunle Ilesanmi, who died from machete cuts while preventing his unruly colleague, Sergeant Okema Azuquo from killing co-tenants in Oke-Odo area of the state.
According to a statement the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bala Elkana, issued Monday, at 8:10pm on June 4 this year, one Azees Adebayo of 8 Dosunmu Street, Agbelekale Oke-odo reported at Oke-Odo Police Station that Azuquo returned home and engaged other tenants in a brawl.
He also reported that the sergeant inflicted machete cuts on Inspector Ilesanmi who was also a tenant in the house while trying to stop him from harming other civilian tenants.
While Inspector Ilesanmi died from injuries sustained, another tenant, Ayodele Eyitayo, sustained a minor injury on his face.
The PR noted that a team of policemen led by the Divisional Police Officer was promptly deployed to the scene.
“The injured persons were taken to hospital for treatment while the sergeant was arrested”.
“While Ayodele was treated and discharged, the Inspector was admitted due to the severity of the injuries he sustained. He, however, died on June 7, 2020 while on admission.”
The homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) Panti has taken over the investigation. Elkana added, “The suspect will be charged to court as soon as investigation and disciplinary proceedings are concluded”.
