A Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos has remanded one Mrs Okafor Edith for allegedly trafficking 600 grams of cocaine.
According to the charge, on July 31, 2021, Edith had unlawfully exported 600 grams of cocaine during the outward clearance of passengers on a flight to Liberia at the departure hall of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, thereby committing an offence contrary to Section 11 of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act Cap N30 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
During the arraignment, the prosecuting counsel, Mr Augustine Nwagwu, urged the court to allow the charge to be read so that the defendant can take her plea.
The defendant pleaded not guilty after which Nwagwu asked for a trial date and the remand of the defendant in the custody of the Nigeria Correctional Service.
However, the defendant’s counsel, Mrs V. Ekwegh, told the court that she had a bail application to move.
After hearing Ekwegh’s bail application, Justice Nicholas Oweibo granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N5m with two sureties in like sum.
“Each of the sureties must either be a landed property owner within the jurisdiction of the court or a civil servant not below grade level 12 in the Federal or Lagos State employment.
“The defendant should be remanded in the custody of the Nigeria Correctional Service pending the perfection of her bail conditions,” the judge added.
