In order to check allegations of extortions, motorists and rights abuse against officials of Federal Road Safety Commission FRSC, police and vehicle inspection officers, the FRSC officials have begun wearing body cameras.
FRSC Corps Marshal, Boboye Oyeyemi, had, at the inauguration of the gadget in Abuja in October 2021, said the platform would improve transparency and accountability in the activities of the Corps nationwide.
Similarly, the House of Representatives had, in February, requested body-worn cameras for FRSC, customs and other security officers whose mandate is maintaining internal security.
According to Daily Trust who went round the Federal Capital Territory on Thursday, observed that FRSC officials stationed at every junction in the city wore the gadget.
Some residents of Abuja, lauded the initiative and asked the police to do same as soon as possible.
“The security agents who need that gadget most are police officers. They’re the ones maintaining internal security, and as such, they should key into the initiative,” Mrs Diana Ugochukwu, a banker, said.
A driver, Tijani Audu, said: “I want IGP to swing into action by ensuring that every single officer starts wearing the camera. This will reduce extortion. The police are extorting us too much and we’re tired of complaining every time.”
