The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a suspected counterfeiter, Garba Haruna, for defrauding unsuspecting members of the public around Computer Village, in the Ikeja area of the state.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, in a statement on Wednesday, said Garba was arrested after his victim raised the alarm on accidentally sighting him close to the same place he had been swindled engaging another customer.
He said the suspect confessed to committing the crime after he was arrested.
Hundeyin said, “The Rapid Response Squad unit of the Lagos State Police Command has arrested a notorious currency counterfeiter who specialised in duping unsuspecting members of the public within Computer Village in Ikeja area of Lagos metropolis.
“The suspect, Haruna Garba, 38 years old, was arrested after a victim he had duped in August 2022, raised the alarm after unexpectedly sighting him again, dubiously engaging a customer, close to the same place he had been swindled.”
“Preliminary investigation indicated that Garba, who was found with fake $700, has been in the fraudulent business of fake currencies for over three years after he was tutored by his late master.”
The PPRO further stated that the suspect had been transferred to the state headquarters for further investigation and prosecution.
