The Lagos state government has, Monday, said it sealed 52 unapproved structures in Festac and Ikoyi among other places across the state for violating the building codes.
Among the 52 structures, 41 were sealed on Fastac Link Road in Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area while the other 11 structures were sealed in Ikoyi-Obalende LCDA and Eti-Osa LGA in locations such as Awolowo Road, Igbo-Efon and Ikate Elegushi.
As addressed in a media statement, while directing the resealing of a commercial development on Lugard Avenue in Ikoyi for infractions of the building code, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr Idris Salako, noticed violations by developers.
Following his observation that some developers were in the habit of breaking government seal to carry out construction overnight, thereby endangering lives as well as the structures, Salako warned such persons to desist from such acts or face the full wrath of the law.
Salako further urged residents to support government’s effort to curb the menace of illegal, unapproved development.
“I urge all Lagosians to be part of the vanguard to checkmate the menace of illegal building construction by tipping off the authorities when you discover any illegal development, as it has been observed that some developers build overnight in order to circumvent procedure,” he said.
As noted in the statement, others with him during the enforcement operation were the Special Adviser to the Governor on Urban Development, Ganiyu Ayuba; Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Foluso Dipe;General Manager, LASBCA, Biola Kosegbe; operatives of LASPPPA and the Special Operations Team of the Governor’s Office.
