As part of efforts to reduce the havoc caused by heavy rains in Badagry, the Chairman of the Local Government Area, Mr Olusegun Onilude, has urged landlords in the council to build drainage channels.
Flooding in Badagry has become perennial and this is due to the topography of the area.
“We are below sea level such that anytime there is a heavy downpour, it will always overflow. Even the drainages lead to nowhere.
“In Ikoga-Zebbe Market, if it rains heavily, the flood can sweep someone away. Some buildings constructed in the market are at the risk of being washed away.
“When we looked at the magnitude of what should be done, we realised that it is beyond the council, so we have written to the appropriate quarters and we are waiting for them to respond.
‘‘If everyone builds drainages and they are linked, they will channel the water to the central drainage.
“Residents are not doing this in some areas in Badagry and when there is flood they will be complaining. Governments are not magicians that will command floods to disappear.’’
Onilude said he would ensure that all drainage channels within the LG were cleared up to ensure the free flow of water.
