Five persons died while 12 others were injured in an accident which occurred on Tuesday around the Foursquare Church, Ajebo on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The accident which occurred around 1:07pm involved a Mazda bus with registration number SMK685YG and Howo truck with registration number ZE-1210G.
It was learnt that the driver of the Mazda bus reportedly slept off due to fatigue, lost control and rammed into the moving truck.
The spokesperson for the Ogun State Sector Command of Federal Road Safety Corps, Florence Okpe, said this in a statement made available to journalists on Tuesday.
She added that those injured were taken to Victory Hospital, Ogere Remo in Ikenne Local Government Area of the state for medical treatment while the bodies of the dead were deposited at the FOS Morgue, Ipara Remo.
The statement partly reads; “The fatal crash occurred at about 1307 hrs on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
“A total of 18 persons were involved which comprised 10 male adult and eighth female adults and 12 people were injured (10 male and two female). Unfortunately, five persons were recorded dead from the crash (four male and one female adult).
“Two vehicles were involved with registration numbers ZE-1210G Howo Truck and a Mazda bus SMK685YG.”
The FRSC said the suspected causes of the fatal crash were burst tyre, speed and fatigue which led to loss of control because the driver was said to have slept off on the wheel and ran into a moving truck.
“The injured victims were taken to Victory Hospital Ogere while the corpses were deposited at FOS Morgue, Ipara Remo.”
The Sector Commander, FRSC Ogun Sector Command, Anthony Uga, however, advised motorists to shun speed and always go for good tyres.
Uga, while emphasising on the issue of fatigue, urged drivers to always create time to rest. He equally charged passengers to always be on alert to correct any abnormality they notice in the drivers, especially when such a driver was seen dozing while behind the wheels.
The sector commander commiserated with the families of the crash victims and prayed God to grant them the courage to bear the irreparable loss.
