The traditional ruler of Ikorodu land in Lagos State, Oba Kabiru Adewale Shotobi has asked all female workers at Ikorodu General Hospital not to work on May 16, 2024 because of a traditional rite, known as ‘Oro’, that will be done in the town.
This directive was given in a letter the monarch addressed to the management of the hospital, warning them to tell all their female workers to stay at home during the day slated for the rite.
The letter titled, ‘Notification Of Magbo (Oro) Festival 2024’, reads: “This is to notify you of the above festival which is slated for Thursday 16th May 2024, according to tradition all females are advised to remain in their respective homes and avoid moving around the town during the Oro Festival.
“Please note that your Organisation is affected by falling within the Oro traditional jurisdictions. You are hereby advised to adhere with the tradition of the Town.
“Your cooperation towards the success of the festival will be appreciated.”
Meanwhile, several high courts in the country had prohibited such directives given by the monarch.
In 2023, the Lagos State Government told residents to disregard a viral notice announcing a planned “land cleansing ritual” or “Oro traditional rites” in parts of the state.
Some of the communities named are Ijora-Badiya, Amuwo Odofin, Ojota, Ikorodu, and Somolu-Bariga.
The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Gboyega Akosile, described the move in 2023 as a step that is illogical and urged all residents to disregard it.
“This is not even what the government should be reacting to. It doesn’t make sense. What is the meaning of ‘owners of the land want to do rituals?’ People should please disregard it,” Akosile said.
