The internet influencer Sir Jarus, real name Suraj Oyewale, has been charged with two counts of domestic violence.
The Lagos Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) said, on Thursday, that the influencer is facing two counts.
It said the first count borders on “assault against his wife” while the second is for “conduct likely to cause a breach of peace”.
Sir Jarus was recently the subject of discourse on the micro-blogging site X when he shared a series of now-deleted posts.
In the posts, he accused Oyewale Ayoola, his wife, of engaging in “fetish practices” and “provocative behaviour”.
The social media influencer stated that her practices led to a “physical altercation” between them both.
The DSVA, which pursues justice for domestic violence victims in Lagos, alerted the police and waded into the matter on June 28.
This led to the arrest of the social media influencer whose case has dominated social media discourse over the past few days.
The DSVA says Jarus’s case will be heard in courtroom five, Ogba Magistrate Court in Lagos.
Earlier, it was reported that a lawsuit filed by Sir Jarus seeking to dissolve his 13-year marriage to Ayoola had surfaced online.
In the suit, the influencer was said to have sought to secure full custody of their three children.
The suit cites “abandoning Islam” and consulting with “soothsayers and herbalists” as reasons for the divorce.
Speaking on the evidence against Jarus, the DSVA said domestic violence “in any form is unacceptable”.
“The Lagos state government maintains a zero-tolerance stance against it,” the government agency added.
