Lagos State and the Netherlands governments have signed a Letter of Intent, LOI, on e-waste management towards enhancing a healthy, sustainable environment.
The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, represented Lagos State Government, while the Consular-General, Netherlands, Micheal Delean, signed on behalf of his government.
The ceremony was witnessed by other government officials of both parties, at Alausa, Ikeja, on Thursday.
The LOI signing with the Netherlands is an initiative to be executed by Closing The LOOP B.V, a social enterprise firm.
According to Wahab, “It is a positive step in handling our waste management initiatives and by so doing tackling global warming effects.
“The Netherlands and Lagos State are both coastal in nature.
“Lagos generates at least 13,000 waste daily. These include solid, medical, and electronic wastes. We have signed a partnership on waste to energy with a private firm.
“We are partnering on e-waste to wealth. Lagos is ahead of most states of the country.
“We want to take our electronic waste and convert it to wealth. This will also create employment opportunities for our teeming residents.
“This initiative is expected to take off very soon.”
Also, Delean expressed the willingness of the Netherlands government to collaborate with Lagos in creating values from e-waste to wealth.
According to him, “We are ready to collaborate with Lagos State Government for the good of the people and the state.
“We are here to turn waste into value. Nigeria doesn’t create value for waste and this is what we like to change.
“That’s why we are here to work together to solve this issue. The time is now. Lagos has set a great example in this feat.”
