OpenAI, the developer behind ChatGPT, has announced the opening of new offices in several major cities, including New York, Seattle, Paris, Brussels, and Singapore, as part of its global expansion initiative. These new locations are in addition to its existing offices in San Francisco, London, Dublin, and Tokyo.
This move follows OpenAI’s recent restructuring plans, a significant $6.6 billion funding round, and notable executive departures. Oliver Jay, former chief revenue officer at Asana and head of APAC and LATAM at Dropbox, has been appointed as the managing director of international operations. Jay will oversee the company’s global expansion, with a focus on the Asia Pacific region, and will be based in Singapore.
A spokesperson for OpenAI revealed that the company is in the process of building its Singapore team to support customers and partners across the Asia Pacific. The Singapore office, which is expected to open later this year, will serve as OpenAI’s second location in Asia, following the launch of its Tokyo office in April. Currently, OpenAI is hiring engineers to join this new venture.
“Singaporeans are some of the highest per capita users of ChatGPT globally, and the number of weekly active users in the country has doubled since the beginning of the year,” OpenAI shared in a statement.
In addition to the new office, OpenAI has partnered with AI Singapore to broaden access to its AI technologies in Southeast Asia. AI Singapore, launched by the National Research Foundation (NRF) in 2017, supports local companies and research institutions in adopting AI.
“Singapore, with its strong foundation in technology, has established itself as a leader in artificial intelligence,” said Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI. “We’re excited to collaborate with the government and the country’s vibrant AI community as we extend our reach across the Asia Pacific region.”
This expansion reflects OpenAI’s vision of leveraging its AI advancements to address global challenges and drive economic growth.
