In a groundbreaking move for South Africa’s transport sector, a consortium of startups and research institutions has launched eKamva, the country’s first electric minibus taxi. Led by transport tech platform GoMetro, the project brings together a range of collaborators including flx EV, Powerfleet, HSW, ACDC Dynamics, and Stellenbosch University’s Faculty of Engineering.
Initiated in 2023, the eKamva project aimed to test the feasibility of electric minibus taxis under South African conditions. Rigorous testing of the vehicles has been conducted on Stellenbosch taxi routes, ensuring the model’s adaptability to local transit demands. This extensive fieldwork marks a significant step towards green innovation in a country where minibus taxis form the backbone of daily transportation.
Soon, minibus taxi owners and operators will be able to join a waiting list to adopt the eKamva model. flx EV is spearheading the development of charging hubs in key locations, with the first hubs set to roll out in Century City and Stellenbosch within the next year. Through the flx EV app, fleet owners can monitor vehicle status, manage operations, and prepay for recharging, while drivers will receive directions to the nearest available charging stations.
“This initiative introduces a novel approach to electrifying the small-vehicle public transport sector, which could stimulate a new economic landscape,” said GoMetro CEO Justin Coetzee. “Its socio-economic impact on the automotive industry could be transformative, aligning with South Africa’s commitment to green mobility.”
With the launch of eKamva, South Africa joins the global movement towards sustainable public transport, positioning itself at the forefront of electric mobility innovation on the continent.
