The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has been thrown into mourning following the tragic death of Balogun Damilola, President of the Faculty of Education, who drowned during a beach outing in Lagos.
The incident occurred on Saturday, September 20, 2025, when Damilola, popularly known among students as Ayanfe Eledumare, was reportedly swept away by strong waves. Eyewitnesses said the student leader had been attempting a backflip near the shoreline while recording a video when he was suddenly pulled into the sea. Rescue efforts were unsuccessful, and his body was recovered the following morning at Museyo Beach, Ibeju-Lekki, roughly two kilometres from the scene.
The news has sparked widespread grief across the UNILAG community, with students and friends paying tribute to Damilola’s leadership and vibrant spirit. Many described him as a rising star who had only recently assumed office as Faculty President after serving as Vice President the previous year.
On social media, tributes poured in. A close associate and former roommate, identified on X as Doyindoski, wrote: “He was my roommate. Always brought vibes to the room. A real one. And bro just became the President of his faculty… RIP Balogun Damilola.”
As of Monday, university authorities and security agencies had yet to release an official statement on the incident.
