Construction of Lagos State’s $3 billion Green Line rail project is scheduled to kick off in December 2025, the state government announced on Monday, bringing the ambitious transportation initiative closer to reality.
The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, made the disclosure in an official statement published on the state government’s X platform, confirming that the project will establish a vital rail connection between Marina and the Lekki corridor.
Osiyemi noted that the state has finalized all preparatory requirements, including detailed feasibility assessments and multiple rounds of stakeholder consultations along the Lekki-Epe axis. These engagements have been crucial in laying the groundwork for the project’s successful implementation.
The rail infrastructure, which is expected to take between two and three years to complete, will be developed in separate phases. Phase one will stretch from the Lekki First Tollgate through to Epe, while the second phase will originate from Marina and incorporate a distinctive over-water construction design.
According to the commissioner’s statement, the government has carried out thorough consultations and technical evaluations along the Lekki-Epe Expressway in advance of the December commencement date. The project will ultimately link Marina to Epe through a phased approach, with the first segment addressing the Lekki First Tollgate to Epe route, and the Marina segment being constructed over water.
The announcement follows ongoing enforcement efforts by state authorities along the Lekki-Epe Expressway, where officials have been systematically removing illegal structures and recovering wetland areas essential for maintaining the Green Line’s protected corridor.
