Officers said their mother, a 27-year-old, is a suspect.

She jumped in front of a train in Dusseldorf and was taken to a hospital with injuries, they added.

The girls were aged one, two and three, while the two boys were aged six and eight. The mother’s sixth child, an 11-year-old boy, survived.

Emergency services are still at the scene, in the Hasseldelle area of the city, with images published by local press showing three ambulances outside a block of flats.

The cause of death has not been confirmed yet.

Authorities in nearby Wuppertal are investigating.
