Anambra State Governor, Charles Chukwuma Soludo, has reportedly escaped an assassination attempt on Friday night.
The suspected assassins stormed Isuofia, Soludo’s home town, sources reveal.
Reports indicate that the heavily armed gunmen had assumed that Soludo was in town for the Easter celebration. However, their efforts met with resistance from police officers stationed at the Isuofia junction which leads to Soludo’s country home. Sadly, a policeman lost his life in the gun battle that trailed the invasion; while many others were left injured.
According to Sunday INDEPENDENT, the suspected assassins; who came in their numbers, invaded Isuofia at exactly 8:30 pm on Friday night with four jeeps. Further, they were said to have been engaged in a gun battle which lasted for hours into the night. They were, however, repelled by the police.
The development led to a stampede as residents scampered to safety as the hail of bullets shattered the peace of the sleepy town.
Meanwhile, in his reaction, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Youth Leader for Anambra South Zone, Hon. Ikechukwu Emenike, who condemned the attack on Saturday, called on the state government to deploy more security men to Isuofia to protect the lives and property of residents in the area as the place had become a target for the gunmen.
“They came at 8:30 pm Friday night and started shooting from the junction.
‘‘One police officer was feared shot. But, the police were able to overcome them. I urge the Anambra State government to provide more security men at Isuofia. You can see that the whole town has run away due to the attack.
‘‘People did not go to the marketplace today because of the fear that they could be attacked,” Emenike said.
