Building Success from the Ground Up: How Olajide Obembe is Shaping Nigeria’s Construction Landscape with Obembe Construction Company Limited
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Olajide Obembe’s journey to the top of Nigeria’s construction industry is a story of resilience, passion, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. As the CEO of Obembe Construction Company Limited, his leadership has transformed the company into one of the most reliable names in the business, known for delivering world-class engineering, procurement, and construction services. With the full-scale remodeling of Abuja’s iconic Transcorp Hilton Hotel as one of their standout projects, Obembe Construction is setting new standards for quality and innovation in the industry.

In this feature interview, Olajide Obembe shares his inspiring journey, the challenges he overcame, and his vision for the future of construction in Nigeria.

A Journey Built from the Ground Up

Starting as a laborer on construction sites, Olajide’s path to success was far from conventional. “I began my career by helping masons, tilers, painters, and carpenters on various sites. It was tough work, but it taught me the basics of construction from the ground up,” Olajide recalls. Over time, his dedication and eagerness to learn propelled him to more challenging roles.

“I worked with Bouygues Construction, a French company, for several years,” he says. “That experience helped me understand not only the technical aspects of construction but also the business and design side of things. I knew then that I wanted to do more—build more—and that’s what led to the establishment of Obembe Construction Company Limited in 2018.”

Setting the Bar with High-Profile Projects

The company’s breakthrough came with the full-scale renovation and upgrade of the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja. “We were involved in every aspect of the Transcorp Hilton project—from sourcing all the materials and furniture to installing fixtures and equipment that were brought in from Europe. If a client wants the same high standards of finishings found at the Hilton, we can deliver exactly that,” says Olajide proudly.

Tell us about your early days in construction. What were some of the key experiences that shaped your career?

Olajide Obembe: I started my career in construction as a laborer, assisting masons, tilers, painters, and carpenters on various sites. My turning point came when I joined Bouygues Construction, a French company, where I learned the intricacies of hotel and hospitality construction, design, and concept development. Those years of hard work and learning laid the foundation for what would become Obembe Construction Company Limited.

What motivated you to establish your own construction company after working with renowned firms?

Olajide Obembe: While working with several firms, I realized there was a gap in the market for companies that could deliver high-quality, European-standard projects. I wanted to create a firm that not only delivered on promises but also raised the bar for construction standards in Nigeria. This vision led to the birth of Obembe Construction Company Limited in 2018.

Obembe Construction Company Limited was involved in the remodeling of Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja. What did that experience mean for your company?

Olajide Obembe: Being part of the team that remodeled and upgraded Transcorp Hilton Hotel was a landmark achievement for us. It solidified our reputation as a company that could handle large-scale, high-stakes projects. The entire experience, from sourcing materials to final finishes, showed that we could deliver exceptional quality, no matter the scale or complexity of the project.

Your company also assists Nigerians abroad in securing properties and building their dream homes. Can you tell us more about this service?

Olajide Obembe: Many Nigerians abroad find it challenging to secure properties in Nigeria due to distance and lack of trusted contacts. We provide a comprehensive service that includes finding properties, handling documentation, and overseeing the construction or renovation process. Our clients can be assured that their projects will be completed to their exact specifications, even without their physical presence.

What distinguishes Obembe Construction Company Limited from other construction firms in Nigeria?

Olajide Obembe:Our commitment to delivering European-standard projects, combined with our ability to source high-quality materials, sets us apart. Whether it’s a hotel, residential building, or office complex, we approach every project with the same level of dedication and professionalism. We also ensure that every project is a seamless experience for our clients.

What do you see as the future of construction in Nigeria, and how is your company positioning itself for that future?

Olajide Obembe: The future of construction in Nigeria is about innovation, sustainability, and quality. We are continuously investing in new technologies and training to ensure that we are at the forefront of these changes. Our goal is to remain a leading force in the industry and to continue setting standards for quality and reliability.

Delivering Excellence for Nigerians Abroad

Obembe Construction is not just about bricks and mortar. The company also serves as a trusted intermediary for Nigerians in the diaspora looking to invest in properties back home. “We understand how difficult it can be for Nigerians living abroad to find reliable partners who can manage their real estate projects. That’s where we come in,” explains Olajide.

Through a streamlined process, Obembe Construction handles everything from finding the right property to completing all necessary negotiations and documentation. The firm’s ability to design and build dream homes to client specifications—even in their absence—has made it a go-to partner for Nigerians abroad.

“Our clients can trust that even without their physical presence, we will deliver a property that meets their expectations and is built to the highest standards,” says Olajide.

A Word of Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

For those looking to break into the construction industry or start their own business, Olajide has some sage advice: “Start from wherever you are and never stop learning. My journey started at the very bottom of the ladder, but I was always eager to learn and grow. Hard work, perseverance, and the willingness to take risks are what got me here.”

He adds, “Your background or starting point doesn’t define you; it’s your vision and determination that matter most.”

Final Thoughts

Obembe Construction Company Limited is more than just a construction firm—it’s a manifestation of Olajide Obembe’s vision for transforming the Nigerian construction landscape. With each project, whether it’s a luxurious hotel renovation or a custom-built home for a client living abroad, the company demonstrates that excellence and quality are not just goals but the very essence of what they do.

As Olajide continues to lead his team to new heights, his story serves as an inspiration to others, proving that with the right mindset and commitment, anyone can build success from the ground up.
