The School of Hardknocks Nigeria (SoHk), in collaboration with Ibrahim Babangida IBB Golf and Country Club has empowered 450 Secondary School Students in FCT, Abuja Nigeria’s capital with Golf training.
CEO of The School of Hardknocks SoHK, Dr Jerry Akubo made this known at the inauguration ceremony held at the IBB Golf and Country Club.
He noted that the focus of the initiative as approved by the Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB), as well as the Secondary Education Board (SEB), is to empower the first 450 inaugural students from 15 Government Secondary Schools in the FCT, Abuja.
Dr Jerry explained that the project will span for 10 years by combining the benefits of golf with character development, “the initiative is poised to shape the lives of these students, equipping them with valuable skills for a successful future. As the programme unfolds, it is expected to create a positive ripple effect within the community, inspiring other organisations and stakeholders to invest in similar initiatives.”
A key highlight of the event was the distribution of participatory medals to the selected 450 students from the 15 Secondary School. Each recipient was chosen based on a combination of academic performance, commitment to the programme and financial need. The medal award is associated with golf training, including equipment, coaching, and tournament participation.
To provide attendees with a glimpse of what lies ahead for the students, a captivating golf training showcase was organised. Skilled young golfers demonstrated their prowess on the greens, showcasing the potential of the training program to unearth talent and nurture future champions.

Meanwhile, individuals from diverse backgrounds also shared their stories of overcoming challenges and achieving excellence. Their talks reinforced the message that hard work, dedication, and perseverance are key ingredients for success both on and off the golf course.
Consequently, Dr Jerry Akubo PhD, reiterated his commitment to improving the lives of Students as well as young adults with access to a sport that not only promotes physical fitness but also instils valuable life skills and character development.
The inauguration commenced with heartfelt opening remarks by the IBB Golf Captain and other team members, who emphasized the importance of Golf Sport in fostering discipline, teamwork, and leadership among Students.
The relevant stakeholders were captivated by the vision of using golf as a means to empower students beyond the classroom.
The event was graced by esteemed dignitaries, including representatives from Education Board, Community leaders, and renowned golf professionals. Their presence underscored the significance of the initiative and highlighted the support it has garnered from various sectors.
The CEO of SOHK Nigeria applauded the donation of Golf Kits to the students by Mrs Vanessa Phala, a South African working with a UN Affiliation in Nigeria. The donated Golf kits were instrumental in boosting the quality of training for the students. He further urged other Stakeholders to reciprocate such kind gesture.
