The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad, is to decorate 72 lawyers with the Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) title on Wednesday.
A statement by the Director of Media and Information of the Supreme Court, Dr. Akande Festus, indicated that the conferment would hold at the main courtroom of the apex court.
The conferment is one of the programmes outlined to officially herald the 2021/2022 Legal Year of the court, even though it had commenced sitting September 13.
The third wave of COVID-19 and the protracted strike embarked upon by the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) earlier in the year largely slowed down the work of the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee hence the late conferment this year.
Expectedly, the CJN would deliver a state-of-the nation’s address to highlight the performance of the Supreme Court and other arms of judiciary in the outgone 2020/2021 Legal Year.
Of the 159 legal practitioners that applied for the SAN rank, 72 were successful after a rigorous exercise. Out of this number, 10 are academics while 62 are advocates.
The Supreme Court began its yearly vacation after a successful 2020/2021 Legal Year on July 25, 2021.
All the programmes billed to mark the commencement of the new legal year are to start at 10:00a.m., the statement added.
