The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Waterfront Infrastructure Development. Esv. (Mrs) Olayinka Patunola-Ajayi, MNI, has directed the contractor handling the construction of the ongoing Ebute-Ero Jetty to speed up work on the project towards ensuring the timely completion of the project.
Esv. Patunola-Ajayi gave the directive recently during an inspection tour of ongoing projects under the Ministry, stressing that the Jetty is strategically located to cater to the need of commuters coming and going from the famous Ebute-Ero market, Gorodom, Oke-Arin, Dosumu and Idumota axis of Lagos Island.
“It will also help to ease traffic gridlock around the axis and ensure quick and safe transportation of goods and services from the market to other parts of Lagos and neighbouring States. On completion of the Jetty, it will take less than 30 minutes for Lagosians commuting through water transportation to travel from Ebute-Ero to Ikorodu and under one hour to get to Badagry,” she stated.
While noting that the construction of a reinforced concrete Jetty with shelters is part of the present administration’s effort to improve the water transportation system in Lagos and boost the socio-economic life of the people, the Permanent Secretary urged the contractor to mobilise more manpower and adequate financial resources to the site in order to finish up on time.
She further stated that the State Government frowns on issues of abandoned projects and efforts should be made to complete the Jetty so that it can be handed over to meet the yearnings of the teeming populace.
Other ongoing projects inspected by Patunola-Ajayi include the construction of White Sand Jetty at Oyingbo, Lagos Mainland and Agboyi-Ketu Jetty which is expected to serve the inhabitants of Agboyi I, II and III Islands. She commended the contractors handling the two projects for a job well done.
“I am impressed with the pace of work done so far. I must commend the contractors for doing the work according to specifications and beyond what is required. However, l must urge you to maintain the tempo so that the project can be commissioned very soon,” she noted.
