Eko Akete Senior Grammar School, Lagos Island, has won the 2021 Lagos Reads Inter-schools Quiz Competition.
Schools from the six districts across the state including Idi Araba Senior High School, Iganmu Senior High School, Government College Agege, Government Senior High School, Ikorodu and Eko Akete Senior Grammar School, participated in the programme.
Speaking at the event which took place at the Lagos State Library Board, Special Adviser on Education to the Lagos State Governor, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, who was represented by Permanent Secretary, Mr Kasali Adeniran, said the programme was designed to improve reading culture among secondary school students.
“You must have the knowledge in different subjects to be able to participate in the quiz. When students read, they will perform well in exams.
“Students will read if you give them a good library, which is the reason the Lagos State Government provided digital library in schools. When students take advantage of opportunities given to them, we will be having library champions.”
Director, Lagos State Library Board, Asimiyu Oyadipe, said the board had been organising programme to promote reading culture in Nigeria. We always promote reading culture by participating in World Book Day. The government has renovated some libraries, including Epe Division, Badagry Division and we have two major libraries that are undergoing renovation.
Likewise, the Permanent Secretary, Parastatals Monitoring Office, Mrs Toyin Oke-Osanyintolu, said reading was the gateway skill that would make all other learning possible.
“Lagos reads initiative is aimed at encouraging and improving the reading culture of all Lagosians by facilitating and promoting reading programmes and activities in both public and private schools and to reward excellence. It is important we inculcate the culture of reading in to the younger generations and encourage them to embrace reading as it is a general belief that readers are leaders.”
