Google has announced a 100% increase in the subscription fee for its 100GB Google One storage plan in Nigeria, raising the price from ₦950 to ₦1,900 per month. The new pricing is set to take effect on March 28, 2025.
In a notification sent to subscribers, Google stated: “The price will automatically increase to N1,900/month on 28 Mar 2025 for your Google One subscription. Cancel at any time in Google Play.”
This adjustment follows an earlier announcement that Google would implement price hikes across several countries, including Nigeria, Egypt, Ghana, and Tanzania, starting February 18, 2025.
Google One is the tech giant’s cloud storage service that provides additional space for Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos. With digital storage now a necessity for both personal and professional use, the sudden price increase may force many Nigerian users to reevaluate their storage needs and budgets.
While Google has not provided a detailed explanation for the price adjustment, factors such as rising operational costs and foreign exchange fluctuations are likely contributors. This increase also aligns with broader price hikes by businesses operating in Nigeria, where inflation and currency depreciation continue to impact the cost of goods and services.
In recent months, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) approved a tariff increase for telecom operators, leading major providers MTN and Airtel to adjust their pricing. Additionally, pay TV giant Multichoice has implemented up to a 21% hike on DSTV and GOtv subscription plans.
With the new Google One pricing set to take effect in March, Nigerian users are advised to review their current storage plans and consider adjusting their subscription or exploring alternative solutions.
