Some yet-to-be-identified assailants on Tuesday killed a professor at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, Dr Anthony Eze.
It was gathered that Eze was a lecturer at the Faculty of Education in the institution.
The reason for the attack had yet to be ascertained, but sources said the deceased was taking his children to school in the morning when the hoodlums stormed his residence.
The sources said on sighting the armed men, he attempted to flee but they rushed at him and shot him repeatedly in the chest.
It was gathered that the gunmen came with a Toyota Corolla salon and after executing their plot, fled to an unknown destination while residents in the area scampered to safety.
An eyewitness said, “We were here this morning when Dr Eze was driving out of his house and suddenly a Toyota Corolla salon pulled towards the entrance of his house and when he tried to drive back, they followed him and shot him, emptying about four bullets into his chest and ran away.
“We rushed him to the General Hospital, Amaku but the doctor at the hospital confirmed that he was already dead.”
Efforts to speak to the Principal Assistant, Registrar, in DIPR Admin Office Unit, Directorate of Information and Public Relations in the institution, Mrs Chika Gladys Ene, proved abortive as her line did not connect.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, also said the command has not got the information about the incident.
