Sistema.bio, a global leader in biogas technology, has raised $15 million to scale its innovative clean energy solutions across Africa. Known for converting animal waste into renewable energy and biofertiliser, the company is making a significant impact on smallholder farmers by improving energy access and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.
The company’s biodigesters, which transform animal waste into biogas for cooking and electricity, have already been installed on more than 12,000 farms in 31 countries. With a strong focus on Africa, Sistema.bio operates in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Malawi, and Nigeria, directly benefiting over 100,000 farmers across sub-Saharan Africa.
Expanding Access to Clean Energy in Africa
In a bid to further expand its reach, Sistema.bio has partnered with Engie Access, an off-grid energy service provider, to introduce its biogas technology in Zambia and Mozambique. This collaboration supports the company’s mission to enhance energy access in rural areas, enabling smallholder farmers to boost their productivity through affordable, renewable energy solutions.
“Our goal is to empower one million farmers by 2025 and contribute to reducing 1% of global emissions by 2030,” said Alexander Eaton, CEO of Sistema.bio. He emphasized the company’s commitment to supporting sustainable farming practices that help decarbonize agriculture and mitigate the effects of climate change.
Sustainable Farming and Climate Action
Sistema.bio’s technology not only provides clean energy but also plays a crucial role in climate adaptation efforts. By using biogas instead of traditional fossil fuels, the company’s systems help reduce CO2 emissions. Additionally, the biofertiliser produced from the waste helps increase crop yields, supporting food security in regions that are vulnerable to climate change.
The recent $15 million funding round builds on Sistema.bio’s Series B funding in 2022 and positions the company for continued growth in Africa, as well as in Asia and Latin America. The investment reflects confidence in Sistema.bio’s ability to scale its impact, particularly in Africa, where clean energy solutions are critical for addressing the challenges faced by smallholder farmers.
Driving Global Carbon Mitigation
As the world intensifies efforts to combat climate change, Sistema.bio’s approach to renewable energy and sustainable farming stands out as a key solution. With operations spanning three continents, the company is well-positioned to drive change in both energy access and agriculture, particularly in Africa where smallholder farmers play a crucial role in food production and climate resilience.
This latest investment underscores the growing recognition of Sistema.bio’s potential to make a transformative impact on the global clean energy landscape. By providing affordable, renewable energy and promoting sustainable farming, the company is not only helping farmers but also contributing to global carbon mitigation efforts.
