Afrobeat musician, Seun Kuti has visited the Lagos Police Commissioner on Monday after the inspector general of police, IGP ordered his arrest for assaulting a policeman.
Before he was arrested, the last son of Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo Kuti turned himself in by visiting the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Idowu Owohunwa on Monday morning.
He was accompanied by a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika. As of the time of filing this report, they are both still with the Commissioner.
He was reported to have assaulted a policeman on official duty on the Third Mainland Bridge, Lagos, on Saturday. This was captured in a video circulating on the internet, showing how the singer was seen hitting an officer. However, in the short clip, the officer didn’t retaliate.
Following the IGP’s directives, policemen stormed the Afrobeat musician’s Lagos apartment and the African shrine, in Ikeja area of Lagos to arrest him.
It was gathered that police operatives were at Seun’s place on Saturday night and Sunday morning, but did not meet him.
This came as Police Service Commission, PSC, condemned the assault of a Police Officer in uniform and on official duty in Lagos by Seun.
PSC commended the Inspector General of Police, Baba Usman Alkali for his prompt action in ordering the arrest and prosecution of Seun.
IGP Usman Alkali Baba assures Nigerians that acts of contempt/disdain for symbols of authority will not be tolerated while offenders of such hideous crimes will be surely brought to book.
Meanwhile, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has said he will provide legal services adding that the singer has enough evidence to defend himself.
Seun Kuti on Saturday wrote, “He tried to kill me and my family. I have the proof but I no dey chase clout. He has apologised and I have agreed not to press charges.”
On Sunday, Kuti wrote on his twitter account, “I welcome the investigation and will give my full cooperation. I also pray to the IG that whoever is wrong should be indicted.”
