The Lagos State Government has stepped up enforcement activities aimed at ensuring adherence to urban planning laws while working towards creating a safer and more sustainable urban environment.
In a statement released on Thursday via social media platform X, the state’s Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed that authorities are currently focused on removing structures that encroach upon the natural pathways of water channels throughout the metropolis.
The commissioner explained that the initiative underscores the administration’s determination to safeguard essential infrastructure, mitigate flood risks, and enhance public safety across the state.
“Operations are currently underway along the Airport Road drainage channel to reclaim the natural waterway and facilitate unimpeded flow through the drainage system,” Mr Wahab noted in his statement.
He added that buildings erected directly within water passages are being demolished as part of the government’s sustained campaign to combat flooding, protect residents, and preserve critical infrastructure.
The commissioner stressed that the state authorities remain unwavering in upholding environmental standards, calling on residents to demonstrate responsibility by fully complying with physical planning and environmental regulations.
In a separate but related matter, the state government has given traders and property owners operating within the Trade Fair Complex a fortnight to obtain proper approval for their structures.
Authorities have emphasised that all construction projects within the complex must align with existing physical planning legislation, cautioning that non-compliance will result in penalties.
