The Lagos State Government has revoked its approval for properties on a section of Elegushi Chieftaincy Family Layout encroaching on the regional road alignment in Lekki, north of Elegushi layout.
It explained that cases of estates, buildings, and structures encroaching on the Right of Way (RoW) of the regional road in the Lekki axis and affecting the state’s master plan had necessitated the revocation.
Lagos Today recalled that the government had in earlier in March said construction of the long-proposed Regional road in the Lekki-Ajah axis, Eti-Osa Local Government area of Lagos State will take off before the end of May, and property encroaching on the project Right-Of-Way will be pulled down by the government, adding that plans had been concluded to mobilise contractors to site for commencement of the construction work that could help to reduce travel time within the axis.
Confirming the plans, the State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, had then, stressed that what had affected the project commencement overtime was the need to remodel its design and alignment in order to reclaim the right-of-way already encroached on by property developers along the corridor.
But, the state’s Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Idris Salako, on Tuesday, while explaining the rationale behind the revocation said the road was first conceived by Lagos State Government in the Lagos Metropolitan Master Plan (1980-2000) and was retained in the approved Lekki Comprehensive Master Plan 2013.
The Commissioner, through a statement released to newsmen, said following the government granted title to land totaling about 500 hectares and issued layout approval (1991) and four major roads were recognized.
He listed the road to include, Coastal Road and Lekki-Epe Expressway, Southern part of Elegushi Land, Regional Road, and Lagoon at the Northern part of the Elegushi layout, adding that all the roads run parallel to one another.
According to him, the roads have been envisioned to engender social-economic and transportation development of the state, which were being hindered by the properties encroaching the right of way in the axis, hence the revocation of the 29 buildings approval.
“In line with the THEMES agenda of Mr. Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, the Regional Road is a precursor to the proposed Fourth Mainland Bridge and a promised dividend of democracy to the good people of Lagos State in order to improve traffic and transportation system within the State.
“Recent observations revealed that this very important transportation corridor has been encumbered by physical developments (including shanties) which negate the objectives of which the Road was conceived.
“Consequently, TAKE NOTICE that by virtue of Section 21(1) (a) of Lagos State Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law, 2015, I, Dr. Idris Okanla Salako, the Honourable Commissioner, Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development (MPP&UD) hereby REVOKE in part, a section of Elegushi Chieftaincy Family Layout that falls within the following coordinates:
