The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has responded to 6,442 incidents in 54 months. This spanned June 2, 2019 to December 31, 2023, under the Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu-led administration.
According to data released by Head, Public Affairs Unit, Nosa Okunbor, yesterday, 1,461 incidents were recorded between January 1 and December 31, 2023, with 138 of these incidents attended to in December.
Out of these figures, 138 incidents were attended in December 2023, with the truck/tanker category responsible for 58 incidents, comprising 39 truck/tanker accidents, 12 breakdowns, two fallen tanker/trucks, and five stuck tanker incidents.
This was followed by 29 vehicle crashes, while fire disaster category came next with 11 cases, comprising seven fire outbreaks, one tanker/truck and three vehicular fires.
However, eight incidents were recorded in the medical category, comprising of suicides, attempted suicides, recovered dead bodies, while other events recorded 19 incidents.
There were also two building collapses, five partial collapses and two collapsed bridges, while an incident of oil spillage and leakage was recorded during the time under review.
The data showed no case of explosion, marine incident, train or air crashes in the month of December, 2023. The data analysis of incidents recorded per local council, revealed that the densely populated Alimosho Local Council, with the largest landmass, recorded the highest number of incidents with 25 out of the 138 incidents recorded in December.
Kosofe Local Council recorded 22 incidents, Ikeja 15, Mushin and Lagos Island recorded 11 incidents each, Apapa, Oshodi-Isolo and Eti-Osa LGAs recorded 10 incidents each, while Ikorodu and Lagos Mainland experienced five incidents each, just as Shomolu recorded four incidents.
Amuwo-Odofin recorded three incidents, while Surulere and Epe recorded two incidents each, with Agege, Ibeju-Lekki and Ifako-Ijaiye LGAs recording one incident each in December 2023.
A close examination of available data on emergency trends in local governments, last year, revealed that Alimosho recorded the most number of cases with 242 incidents, while Ikeja Local Council placed a distant second with 191 incidents and Kosofe third with 158 cases.
While Ojo council recorded a low 13 cases and Badagry council recorded zero. On the monthly emergency trends, the most cases in a month was recorded in October (145 cases), followed by December with 138 cases, while January came third with 129 cases. The lowest number of incidents was recorded in May with 106 cases, April with 111 cases, and November with 112 cases.
