The Lagos State Public Works Corporation has begun clearing out drains of Abebe, Eric Moore roads, Surulere to protect the state against flooding as it cautioned residents to desist from dumping refuse in drainages.
The corporation alarmed this warning after refuse cleared from the drainages was majorly plastics and nylons.
This call is among the several others that have been aired on print and electronic media over the years to address the issue of flooding and the risk it poses.
Last September, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tunji Bello, warned residents against dumping of refuse in drains, an action which could escalate the problem of flooding Lagos is subjected to today.
In July 2014, the Special Adviser to the state governor on Environment, Dr. Taofeeq Folami, decried the indiscriminate dumping of refuse and blockage of free flow of drainage.
He further threatened that anyone caught would be severely dealt with.
Again in April 2018, the Special Adviser to the Governor, Engineer Adebola Shabi, warned against the indiscriminate dumping of waste, especially during the rainy season.
He highlighted the need for residents to refrain from the negative habit, as it is one of the major causes of flooding in the state.
Shabi also noted that the rains had already started, and the government viewed the risk of flooding as a major concern.
Sadly, despite these convincing reasons and measures among others to abate flooding and loss of lives and properties, with continuous harp on the dire need for residents to quit dumping refuse in the drainages, residents keep up with the harmful practice.
