… school owing lecturers despite collecting fee from students
Some lecturers at the Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, Lagos, have complained bitterly about the poor handling of the sub-degree programmes in the institution.
The sub-degree programmes include; Diploma, Pre-degree, HND-B.Sc conversion programme run for six semesters and lecturers are usually paid after a semester.
However, investigations revealed that the school had not paid for two semesters.
They also lamented that the school was not paying adequate attention to the sub-degree programmes, saying all the stages of the programme right from the admission registration stage to uploading of results online always had hitches and delays.
Some of the lecturers who spoke with The PUNCH do not want their names mentioned.
A lecturer who lectures in one of the programmes, said, “A semester is about three to four months. The third semester is ongoing. They always pay after a semester. We made a request two months ago when we ended the session, and they said they are processing the fund.
“The lecturers are short-paid too, the school will collect 70% of all the fees while the faculty and department will share the 30% and there will be cut here and there. At the end of the day, what they will get is nothing to write home about.”
Another lecturer complained about the services of the ICT Department of the school, saying the university management needed to review its operation.
“The problem is that the management is not giving adequate attention to the programmes. The ICT department headed by Prof. Toyin is also a major problem they always delay in computing results. The LASU management should pay adequate attention to ensure the prompt delivery of promises made to students.
“This is because a programme of two years may be delayed for three years. ICT delay all process of the sub-degree programmes. The LASU ICT department is over-centralised, it should be decentralised because they are fond of delaying everything.”
Another lecturer said, “Lecturers teaching in the program have not been paid for three semesters.
“The school is owing lecturers teaching in all these programmes for at least two semesters. This is despite they have collected N270,000 from each of the students per annum.”
Coordinator, Centre for Information and Public Relations, LASU, Mrs Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile, when contacted said, “The VC is already looking into all the matters raised. She will address them.”
