Meta Announces Layoffs at WhatsApp, Instagram, and Reality Labs Amid Team Restructuring
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Meta has initiated another round of layoffs, impacting employees across key departments like WhatsApp, Instagram, and Reality Labs, sources have revealed. Unlike a sweeping, companywide layoff, these job cuts appear to be part of team-specific reorganizations.

Some affected Meta employees, including Jane Manchun Wong—known for reporting on unreleased app features before joining the Threads team in 2023—have already taken to social media to share their news. A company spokesperson, Dave Arnold, told The Verge, “Today, a few teams at Meta are making changes to ensure resources align with long-term strategic goals and location strategy.” He added that some employees would be reassigned to new roles or teams, while those whose roles have been eliminated will be supported in finding new opportunities.

These recent cuts come after a smaller wave of layoffs in Meta’s Reality Labs division earlier this year. The company first laid off 11,000 employees in 2022 following overly optimistic projections post-pandemic and then reduced its workforce by another 10,000 in 2023 as part of CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s “year of efficiency.”
