The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has disclosed that corps members deployed to Lagos State contribute services valued at more than N14 billion to the state’s economy every year.
Director General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, revealed this during a courtesy visit to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at the Lagos State Government House, Marina.
According to him, the estimate represents the minimum economic value of the services rendered by the over 44,000 corps members posted to Lagos across different sectors. These include 333 medical doctors, 306 pharmacists, 274 nurses, and 7,188 teachers, among others.
“NYSC provides services for the government and people of Lagos State worth over N14 billion annually,” Nafiu stated.
He further described Lagos as the most sought-after posting destination for corps members due to its relative safety and the confidence parents repose in the state. Nafiu noted that his visit was to appreciate the state government’s continuous support and to reaffirm NYSC’s commitment to deploying adequate manpower to Lagos.
The DG commended ongoing renovation at the temporary camp in Iyana-Ipaja and the state’s investment in constructing a permanent 10,000-capacity orientation camp in Agbowa, Ikorodu. Once completed, the facility will eliminate the current practice of relocating some corps members to neighbouring states due to space constraints.
“The Scheme looks forward to when the camp will be completed so that corps members deployed to Lagos will camp in the same location,” he said, while appealing for additional support such as the provision of an ambulance for the NYSC Lagos secretariat.
Governor Sanwo-Olu, in response, assured continued collaboration and confirmed that over N5 billion had already been committed to the orientation camp project, which began in January 2025. He also disclosed that the state had reviewed upward the minimum wage for corps members serving directly in government offices to reflect prevailing economic realities.
Meanwhile, the Federal Government recently approved an increase in the monthly allowance for corps members nationwide, raising it from N33,000 to N77,000 in line with the new national minimum wage.
