There is currently outrage as Nigerians demand justice for 20-years-old Pelumi Onifade, a journalist with an online media, GboahTV, allegedly arrested and killed by the Lagos State Task Force police on Saturday October 24 this year.
According to reports, Onifade, a 200-level student of the department of History in Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijagun in Ogun State, was said to have gone on an official assignment to cover a scene at the Ministry of Agriculture, Abattoir Oko Oba Agege where there was information that there is COVID-19 Palliatives.
Onifade, who was on his GboahTV jacket during the assignment, was reportedly dragged by the task force while covering an attack by a mob at a government facility in the area.
After days of search for him, his body was found in a mortuary in Ikorodu area of the state.
In a statement on Tuesday, GboahTV confirmed his death. “It has been confirmed that the Gboah TV staff ‘Onifade Pelumi’, arrested by the Lagos State Task Force at the Ministry of Agriculture, Abbattoir, Agege is dead.”
The statement read in part, “The family and the broadcast station tried for days to locate him before his corpse was discovered at a mortuary in Ikorodu.”
The management noted, however, that the police are currently investigating the matter and have assured the management, the family and the community that the investigation would be thorough and swift.
It added, “Onifade Pelumi died while covering the scenes at the site of the palliative storage centre. He will be deeply missed!”
“Further details will be released upon completion of the Investigation by Police Force,” it stated.
While Nigerians have aggressively taken to Twitter with the hashtag #JusticeforPelumi, others suggested that they march to the Lagos Task Force office to demand answers and get justice for the slain journalist.
