The Lagos State Police Command has taken into custody a senior member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) following allegations of assault and murder on Lagos Island.
The suspect, identified as 55-year-old Shamsideen Adio, popularly known as Shameleon, is currently being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti-Yaba, where detectives are investigating the two separate cases.
According to a statement issued on Friday by the Command’s Deputy Public Relations Officer, Babaseyi Oluseyi, Adio is accused of violently attacking a dispatch rider on Lagos Island. He allegedly used a helmet and his fists to inflict severe injuries, leaving the victim hospitalised and dependent on oxygen.
Police investigations also linked Adio to an earlier incident on August 28, 2025, during which he allegedly struck another man multiple times on the head and face with a metallic ring during a confrontation. Despite medical attention, the victim later died on September 17, 2025. His body has been deposited in the mortuary for autopsy.
News of the victim’s death sparked protests at the suspect’s office in Sandgrouse Market, Lagos Island, where sympathisers of the deceased set two of Adio’s motorcycles ablaze, escalating tensions in the area.
Concerned about the unrest, Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, personally led a team of mobile policemen, tactical squads, and conventional officers to the scene to restore calm.
The police commissioner confirmed that the suspect remains in custody and assured that he will face prosecution once investigations are concluded. He appealed to residents to remain calm and law-abiding, stressing the command’s commitment to ensuring justice is served.
