The Shell Petroleum Company of Nigeria Limited says it is not planning to pull out of Nigeria as being rumoured in the country.
Country Head Corporate Relations and SPDC Director, Mr Igo Weli, made this clarification in Owerri, Imo State capital, while answering reporters’ questions.
Addressing participants at the 2022 workshop on right of way, crude theft and pipeline vandalism for journalists from Abia and Imo states, Weli said that media, through its reportage, should help the company in countering some of the needless operational problems being experienced from its host communities in the Niger Delta.
“We implore journalists to help the SPDC to position the company on the right perspectives in their reports,” Weli said.
According to him, some of the problems confronting the SPDC in host communities included pipeline vandalism, attack on and kidnapping of workers for ransom, among others.
He further said that the SPDC workforce which used to be about 4,000 has reduced to about 2,500.
However, Weli said the business environment in Nigeria was particularly challenging for Shell when compared to other countries where it also had offices or investments.
