Tesla is no stranger to high-profile reveals, and Thursday’s unveiling of their highly anticipated Robotaxi could be the most show-stopping event yet. Set against the backdrop of Warner Bros. Discovery’s iconic movie studio in Burbank, California, the event promises to be a spectacle for tech enthusiasts and Tesla fans alike.
Doors will open at 5 p.m. PT, with Tesla CEO Elon Musk taking the stage at 7 p.m. PT to deliver remarks at what has been dubbed the “We, Robot” event. True to Tesla’s usual style, the event will be livestreamed on YouTube and Musk’s own platform, X (formerly Twitter), allowing the world to witness the grand reveal.
This event, originally scheduled for August 8, was delayed due to a major design change to the vehicle’s front. The unveiling comes amid Tesla’s aggressive push towards full autonomy, which Musk hinted at earlier this year when he slashed over 10% of the company’s workforce and said they were going “balls to the wall for autonomy.”
Tesla’s history with autonomous vehicle promises has been long and sometimes controversial. Their Full Self-Driving (FSD) system, while impressive, still requires human oversight despite the bold name. Back in 2019, Musk introduced the idea of a robotaxi fleet, promising that Tesla owners would be able to turn their vehicles into self-driving taxis with a simple software update. Millions of robotaxis were supposed to hit the roads by 2020, but that vision has yet to materialize.
Now, it seems Tesla is shifting its focus to a dedicated robotaxi fleet, designed from scratch to meet the future of autonomous travel. Early images from Walter Isaacson’s 2023 biography of Musk show a Cybertruck-inspired, two-door, two-seater vehicle without a steering wheel or pedals. While details about its autonomous capabilities are still under wraps, this event is expected to be more about showcasing the vehicle’s design than diving into the tech behind it.
Tesla continues to capture the world’s attention, and Thursday’s Robotaxi reveal will no doubt be another bold step in the company’s quest to revolutionize the way we think about transportation. Keep an eye out for the livestream—it’s sure to be a ride.
