TikTok is adding content filtering into its family pairing feature which will allow parents to link their account to their teens to enable content and privacy settings.
The new function seeks to reduce the possibility of teens viewing anything their parents find disruptive and harmful to them.
TikTok has been developing this feature since March and is currently available by default.
In addition to TikTok’s Content Levels system which already limits mature content to 13–17-year-olds, parents can add keywords to the content to add a personalised layer.
In the process of modifying the Family Pairing feature, TikTok involved the Family Online Safety Institute to know how to strike a balance between enabling families to choose the best experience for their needs and also to ensure it respected young people’s rights to participate in the online world.
On Tuesday, the company also announced the launching of a global Youth Council later in 2023.
“Youth Council will provide a more structured and regular opportunity for youth to provide their views,” Julie de Bailliencourt, Global Head of Product Policy in TikTok said.
