The Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court, Lagos, has fixed August 17 as the judgement date for the rape suit filed against University of Lagos (UNILAG) Lecturer, Mr. John Otema.
Presiding Judge, Justice Abiola Soladoye fixed the judgment date on Monday after both parties adopted their final written addresses.
The varsity teacher, who is facing three counts bordering on rape and assault occasioning harm, contrary to sections 173 and 260 (1) (2) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015, was accused of raping two students of UNILAG.
Otema is alleged to have had unlawful sexual intercourse on January 17, 2018 with a student A (named withheld), around the Distance Learning Institute, UNILAG.
He is alleged to have also physically assaulted her, hitting her several times in the face, strangling her and biting her back.
Otema was also accused of raping another student on January 31, 2018, at his home in the Bariga area of the state.
At the resumed proceedings on Monday, the defense counsel, Fred Onyeka, had in his final written address dated December 5, 2019, urged the court to discharge and acquit the defendant of the three counts against him.
However, the state through it’s prosecuting counsel, Mr. Arinola Momoh-Ayokanbi, in a written address dated February 6, 2020, urged the court to convict and sentence the defendant based on the strength of the evidence against him.
The final hearing and judgement would be made in approximately five weeks from today.
