In line with curbing the rape menace in the city, the state’s Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team (LSDVRT), has explained that consent during sexual intercourse can be withdrawn at any time, by either party(ies) and failure to respect such translates to rape.
Stating this in the 9th Public lecture of the Lagos State University (LASU), LSDVRT Coordinator, Mrs. Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, who spoke on “rape crisis in the pandemic: socio-legal discourse”, explained that a rape could still occur, even after initial mutual agreement
According to her, sexual assault is a criminal offense in violation of section 261 of the criminal law and convicted persons would be liable to life imprisonment.
She further charged victims of sexual violence to speak up and ensure that they retain all the evidence, such as abstaining from birthing, keeping their clothes and others that might help to prove cases against suspects.
In the same vein, the Dean of faculty of law, LASU, Prof. Funmuniyi Adeleke, who moderated the lecture, stated that the University is against sexual violence and had produced a handbook that contains a penal code for the crime, even before the city’ sexual violence laws.
