The Lagos State Government has intensified efforts to tackle flooding with the removal of illegal structures obstructing drainage channels in Ebute Metta.
The enforcement exercise, which took place on Thursday, targeted encroachments along the Jebba/Kano collector, a key stormwater drainage system in the area.
Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed the development in a statement posted on his official X handle. He also shared video footage showing enforcement officers dismantling concrete barriers and cutting through metal barricades that had been erected across the drainage channel, blocking water flow and contributing to recurrent flooding in the community.
“Our enforcement team has cleared the illegal structures built along the Jebba/Kano collector in Ebute Metta. These encroachments disrupt the free passage of stormwater and remain one of the major causes of flooding in this axis,” Wahab said.
The commissioner urged residents to desist from blocking or encroaching on drainage rights of way, stressing that indiscriminate construction not only compromises public infrastructure but also endangers lives and property.
He further reiterated the state government’s commitment to maintaining functional drainage systems across Lagos as part of broader flood prevention measures.
