The Lagos State House of Assembly (LAHA) has, Thursday, commended the efficient implementation of new reforms initiated in the transport sector by the State government.
The Chairman, House Committee on Transportation, Mr. Adedeji Temitope Adewale gave the commendation when its members paid a working visit to the Ministry of Transportation as part of oversight functions.
He noted that the initiatives would ensure that the state transport system becomes a model for measuring efficiency in transportation, not only in Nigeria but also in West Africa sub-region.
According to Adewale, the obvious improvements in all modes of transportation including water, rail and road indicates that the state government’s vision for efficient multimodal transport system is yielding positive results.
The chairman averred also that the Ministry of Transportation, despite being one of the core ministries saddled with important responsibilities in the public service, has lived up to its mandate in terms of visible road infrastructure and traffic management.
While applauding the Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Frederic Oladeinde and his team for their doggedness, resilience, hard work and die-hard spirit, the chairman pledged that the State House of Assembly would continue to support the ministry with necessary legal framework and legislation to help achieve more in the implementation of sustainable transport policy of the state government in the overall interest of the public.
In his words, “Let me commend the Commissioner for Transportation and his team for the good work you are doing in transportation, which is fast helping the state government to attain greater height in all modes of transportation.
“Water transportation is getting better. BRT is perfectly working. Different road infrastructure projects visible everywhere. If you continue this way, you will take the state to the next level of transportation excellence.”
I sincerely commend you, he continued, and urge you not to relent as we are gradually attaining the Smart City status of our dream.
Earlier, Oladeinde had noted that efficient traffic management and transportation is crucial to achieving sustainable economic growth, adding that all transport infrastructure projects embarked upon by the Ministry were aimed at achieving the Multi-modal Transport system of the state government.
He explained that the ministry, at the inception of the present administration, identified 60 gridlock areas which required urgent solution.
He added that the newly reconfigured six junctions/roundabouts at Allen Avenue, Maryland, Ikotun, Lekki First and Second Roundabouts and Abraham Adesanya were part of the intervention programmes embarked upon to bring traffic congestion to the barest minimum and that more of such projects would be done in record time.
In his own contribution, the Special Adviser to the governor on Transportation, Mr. Oluwatoyin Fayinka promised that the enforcement of traffic laws would be strengthened in accordance with the 2018 Traffic Law reforms of the State to reduce traffic congestion across the metropolis.
He explained that Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) is undergoing a re-branding in terms of allowances, health insurance, training and regular provision of kits under the present administration.
“The agency will not betray the confidence reposed in it by the state government,” he assured state government.
