Lagos State chapter’s chairman of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), Adedeji Doherty, has called for the withdrawal of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in the state over alleged frustration of businesses.
Doherty, who called on the state government to urgently make amends, alleged that the peace and tranquillity of the state had been truncated by activities of the union, through road blockages, unfair policies through high taxes and levies imposed on businesses, which had led to alleged frustration and closure of businesses.
The party chairman, who made the call at a virtual town hall meeting, said: “The NURTW needs to be withdrawn. They are exacerbating the plight of the people coupled with other levies, taxes and charges, which is suffocating many businesses. We need this government to rethink and make amends where necessary. We are open and ready to share ideas for the general well-being of the people. We need a society where there is peace and tranquility, talents development, equity, fairness and justice. The welfare of the masses is paramount to us.”
At the meeting, he emphasised the party’s top priority on women and youth empowerment. He maintained that the party was returning with succor to ameliorate the plights of the people.
According to him, the party will focus on youth and women empowerment going forward to arm them with requisite knowledge to wage war against any form of deception by any political agent.
He called on young people to swiftly resist any form of temptation from any party or persons to use them in furtherance of evil deeds, noting that the end of such engagement was destruction.
He said: “Let no one use you for destruction and dump you. Our youths are not professional thugs nor agents of destruction. We must strive to make their life better by identifying their unique talents and potentialities, and help them in any way possible to develop them to be useful not only for themselves and the state but for the country at large.”
