Following the agonising death of a woman and her twin babies after delivery, a Lagos doctor popularly known as Aproko Doctor has harped on the importance of attending antenatal care early enough.
He took to his Twitter account to call on pregnant women to register for antenatal care to avert preventable deaths of babies and mothers during child delivery.
He decried, “Twins couldn’t make it, mother also died from blood loss”, hence, he implored, “Register for antenatal care as soon as you know you’re pregnant.”
He advised further “You need to have ultrasound scans at least. All pregnant women should have scans at between 10 and 14 weeks and 18 and 21 weeks.”
His tweet read, “The mother of these twins didn’t register for antenatal care early enough, only did a scan towards the end of the pregnancy.”
Early scans, Aproko Doctor noted, are to time the pregnancy, see if it is more than one, also to catch anomalies like the one above.
He also hinted that the earlier the ultrasound, the better so that better decisions can be made early enough to avoid problems later.
His words, “Don’t assume that you have been pregnant before and so you don’t need to waste time and money doing all these.”
No two pregnancies are the same, he cautioned. Register as soon as you know you’re pregnant.
