Two persons lost their lives on Saturday while 15 others sustained injuries when a speeding DAF truck overturned at a diversion point along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
It was gathered that the incident involved a vehicle loaded with bags of onions and passengers.
The vehicle was travelling towards Lagos when the incident occurred around Eldorado axis on the expressway around 6:30am, leading to traffic gridlock.
The Public Relations Officer, Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, Mr Babatunde Akinbiyi, who confirmed the incident, gave the number plate of the truck as RBH 214 XA.
He said, “According to eyewitness accounts, as the vehicle was approaching the diversion bend, the driver lost control, probably as a result of speeding. It overturned in the process, spilling all the onions it was carrying on the road, together with the 17 passengers atop the truck.
“Two of the passengers died on the spot while 15 others were injured. The rescue agencies at the scene of the crash were TRACE, police, Federal Road Safety Corps, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and JBN.”
Akinbiyi commiserated with the families of the deceased and warned drivers to reduce their speed while approaching diversion and construction zones.
