In its continuous bid to halt the spread and existence of COVID-19 across the state, the Lagos State Safety Commission has on Wednesday kicked off training for all stakeholders in the transport sector in the state.
The training, which began on Wednesday September 2 on the theme, “Hygienic Management after the ease of COVID-19 lockdown”, is designed for transporters in the sector.
It held at two locations including the Ojota new garage and the Ikotun-Oshodi motor parks, Ikotun area, where officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) presented talks on safety measures.
The Director-General of the commission, Mr. Lanre Mojola, said that transporters were being trained on personal and work place safety due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
He said that the state government initiated the hazard identification, avoidance of drug and substance abuse among other safety measures.
“The Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has been able to manage the pandemic in spite all odds toward its gradual elimination,” Mojola stated.
With this, the DG called on all members of the National Union of Road Transport Worker (NURTW) to utilise the advantage of the training and ensure the pandemic is defeated.
In his response to the initiative, the NURTW Chairman in Lagos State, Mr. Musiliu Akinsanya, also known as MC Oluomo, charged members to complement government’s efforts by adhering to the stipulated COVID-19 protocols.
Part of the protocols he harped on are: maintaining of social distancing in their vehicles, daily fumigation of vehicles, compulsory wearing of nose masks and positioning of hand washing equipment in strategic places in various motor parks.
The NURTW boss accepted that the pandemic was real. In turn, he admonished his members to maintain all COVID-19 rules as specified by the Ministry of Health and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).
He emphasised, “Let us protect our lives. The pandemic is real. We urge transporters not to rest on their oars but ensure we defeat the pandemic totally,” he said.
At the training, beneficiaries engaged in safety moments with members of the motor parks and distributed safety kits comprising bar soaps, sanitisers, and nose masks among others.
