Motorists in Lagos have been warned against the use of defective, improperly registered, and plateless vehicles on its roads.
The Lagos State government explained that the offences contravene Sections 15 and 16 of the state’s Transport Reform Law 2018.
In a statement by the Deputy Director, Public Affairs, Bolanle Ogunlola, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transportation, Abdulhafiz Toriola on Sunday, noted that covering of number plate without authorisation, use of faded and damaged number plates, as well as misuse and non-use of number plate violate the law, especially with the current insecurity in the land.
He advised motorists to use water and non-chemical to wash the number plates of their vehicles to prevent them from being damaged.
Explaining further the act of misuse of number plate, the permanent secretary declared that the brandishing of private number plate for commercial vehicle and otherwise also violates the law.
For individuals, who are at the moment not willing to register their vehicles for one reason or other, Toriola counseled them to contact the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency (MVAA) in the state for the issuance of Temporary Vehicle Tag (TVT) in line with Section 193 of the extant legislation, pending their final decision for permanent registration or otherwise.
